The project goal is to build a super energy efficient dwelling in the heart of Melbourne that showcases latest designs and proven energy efficient technologies.

By transforming the under-used laneway into a sustainable, small footprint, high rise dwelling, the project is demonstrating how to achieve a low emissions lifestyle.

It will be a zero fossil gas, highly insulated air-tight building featuring super efficient direct geothermal heating and cooling and other cutting edge efficient electrical appliances.

The dwelling will be powered by a combination of rooftop solar photovoltaic and 100% renewable Green Power.

Direct Energy Australia is assisting the 5×4 team with the specification of the Geothermal Heating & Cooling system for space heating/cooling and water heating to reduce this energy usage by up to 75% or more.

Capital costs: The Victorian Government will support the full capital cost of installing GeoExchange systems at public sites such as secondary schools, community centres, police stations, retirement housing, hospitals, fire stations and libraries, and 50% of the capital cost of installing the system at private demonstration sites.

Proposed projects will be initiated by a public or private organisation that would support the project up to a period of five years after its completion by allowing the energy use to be monitored.

Read the latest Report to the Council of Australian Governments’ Select Council on Climate Change.

Chapter 2.4, p.22 demonstrates that GSHP is moving in the right direction !

Seventeen of the submissions to this paper supported the inclusion of GSHP in the RET scheme. Various submissions refer to the technology as ground source heat pumps, direct use geothermal heating and cooling systems.

One of the primary reasons given for inclusion of this technology is that it is a form of heat pump, similar to air-sourced heat pumps that are already eligible under the RET, and utilises geothermal energy which is recognised as a renewable energy source under the RET scheme.

It is argued that it is inequitable to include one type of heat pump while excluding another.

Many of the submissions made the further argument that GSHPs have several advantages compared to air-sourced heat pumps, the main one being that GSHPs are more efficient for heating in winter and cooling in summer. This is because ground temperatures are much more constant than ambient air temperatures. Other advantages of this technology cited in submissions are its ability to reduce peak electricity demand and its ability to produce energy 24 hours a day.

Several examples were provided of demonstration projects in Australia that are completed or planned, with the most common being the Geothermal Australia building and the Brush Ski Lodge resort at Mt Hotham. Submissions also noted that ground source heat pumps have been much more widely deployed in the USA, Canada and the EU compared to Australia.
