“The B’Rush Ski Club, Mt Hotham found an energy efficient and environmentally friendly solution in Direct Energy’s EarthLinked direct geoexchange heat pumps. With winter temperatures down to minus 10 degrees, the lodge’s high energy demand was previously met by a combination of electric and gas (LPG) fired boilers. Direct Energy’s technology has cut our energy consumption by 75 % and our fossil fuel usage by more than 80%. The payback period of 6 years is considered by the club to be completely acceptable given the expected 30 to 50 year life of our building. Since commissioning, forecasted savings have been exceeded with several spin-off benefits. The new system is spectacularly comfortable, has been universally acclaimed by our guests, the resort and wider communities and has been featured in several publications and forums, including the 2009 Alpine Resorts Sustainability Forum at Thredbo on the 1st May.

    MT ELIZA

In restoring and modernising an historic cliff-top house at Mt. Eliza we decided to push the envelope for long-term energy efficiency. We have lived in North America and knew that ground source heat pumps were just about the most efficient means for heating, cooling, hot-water heating and pool heating. We were delighted to find that Direct Energy is supplying and installing EarthLinked’s direct geoexchange technology in Australia and could provide an all-in-one solution for our requirements. Using the constant temperature of the ground as a heat source and sink saves 30 -70% of our energy requirements. We thoroughly recommend that others consider Direct Energy’s direct geoexchange technology for their space and water heating and cooling. Certainly, anyone building a new home or office must consider this technology. And, as we have demonstrated, it’s not hard to use it in retrofitting an 80+ year old historic home.

“Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) is the radio astronomy division of CSIRO and is currently building one of the most powerful radio telescope arrays in the world in a remote, radio quiet area of Western Australia. An enormous amount of information is collected which requires very powerful and reliable processing electronics and computer systems that need constant cooling. The remote desert location drives a need for very low power consumption and direct geoexchange ground coupled heat pumps are an excellent solution. A system is installed in an experimental cooling arrangement at ATNF’s headquarters at Marsfield for evaluation. Direct Energy Pty Ltd supplied the equipment and arranged all associated installation work within a very short time frame. Complex and very thorough testing has proved that the direct exchange ground coupled heat pump system is the best available solution for providing continuous, reliable, maintenance free and cheap cooling of sensitive scientific equipment in a remote desert environment.
